Research Associate (or Assistant) in Biomedical Image Analysis

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate for a collaborative project funded by the Wellcome Trust. The aim of the project is to artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to discover and quantify markers of pathological retinal ageing and thus predict individual progression and conversion to late age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As part of the project we seek to answer two fundamental questions: (1) Can we use machine learning to interrogate high resolution retinal OCT images identify and quantify early structural markers in the retina that discriminate pathological changes from healthy ageing and accurately classify AMD at a population level? (2) Can we utilise machine learning applied to generate from ophthalmic multi-modal imaging, genetic testing, functional parameters and patient history and demographics to predict the individual risk for progression to late AMD? The project will combine two important areas of technology to address the challenge of identifying progression and conversion to late age-related in order to improve outcomes for patients: AI and ML techniques and advanced imaging techniques.
Salary range: £37,904 – £45,547 per annum (candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £33,380 – £35,061 per annum).
Fixed term appointment from 1st January 2018, for up to 5 years
Essential requirements:
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e. Computing or Engineering.
  • A strong computing or engineering background.
  • Proven knowledge and track record in several of the following areas: Machine learning, computer vision and medical image analysis (in particular segmentation, registration, feature analysis, modelling or visualization).
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to organise your work with minimal supervision and prioritise work to meet deadlines.

You will be part of the Biomedical Image Analysis Group based at the South Kensington campus.
